When I Get Downtime/Geek Time…

Really need to get myself and my company organised more. These are some sotwares that I’d like to try out, when I get more organised and have the time.

VoodooPad : WiwkiWikiWikiWeb for the desktop.

Dowser: a research tool for the web, clusters results from major search engines, associates words that appear in previous searches, and keeps a local cache of all the results you click on in a searchable database.

Near-Time Flow: peer to peer collaborative content and knowledge manager … collective editing and context-driven discussion

Curio: idea development environment. Freeform sketchbook environment for taking notes, sketching, and collecting images, bookmarks, documents, movies, and text clippings.

iStickyr: share desktop stickies between users.

Forms To Go: custom PHP, ASP, Perl scripts for HTML forms.

webEdition CMS: PHP4 content management system

Tinderbox: personal content management assistant

iWiki: Wikipedia lookup utility

PithHelmet: Safari plugin adds content filtering and site preferences

Oh, TiVo for my iPod? Sorta…

iPodder – Adam Curry? from MTV? wha??? Must investigate soonest!

Looks cool, serving feeds via mac.com webspace looks like the way to go. Might helpfully automate our monthly mixtapes too…

Mobile Blogging : Blogia

Blogia looks good (available now for Series 60, November for UIQ).

Seems it will plug straight into movabletype (they say typepad, but i think this may mean typepad hosted services only judging by the online guide). Will certainly make pix and audio easy.

I’m still on the search for a mobile compatible (localhost) wikiweb or similar.

Links We Like

Nice weblog: verseguru.com

37Signals are running an interesting workshop on how they built basecamp, their web based project management tool. I really want to use basecamp at some point. Adaptive Path are running one on building Blogger too.

37Signals also have something a bit worrying – 37Express – a 7day turnaround, one page, faceless redesign service for £2500. This kind of commodity design could be the way it is going, and if true, might be something we look at.

Red vs Blue. Some people have far too much free time.

WikiMobile

Note to self: Investigate downloading the entire Wikipedia and putting it on a phone. It should be fairly simple? Someone must have written a wiki engine for Series 60?

Added notes: Ah-ha, Python is out for UIQ, so getting there. WikiLite mentioned on that page runs at 25 lines of Python code.

Also: An RSS reader for P900. Another one.

New Stuff!

Spent some time housekeeping last week and updating softwares. I’m liking the new version of Ecto for blogging, the new NetNewsWire for browsing, Flickr for photos, the new Bit Torrent for downloading. Dock Seperators are fantastic, but i can’t find where i got them from. They are just ‘empty’ applications that you copy and rename and drag into the dock. Very cool.

The new phone (P900) is working nicely now, but syncing isn’t the smooth path it should be. I don’t use the Apple Mail, iCal and Address Book so getting Entourage to work with it needs a couple of scripts but after that everything is great. The whole P900 – iSync thing works so well for me that I spent a good deal of time setting up Address Book properly (finally). That combined with the sheer brilliance of Salling Clicker has made me almost like the phone. Almost – bloody awful buttons on the flip literally are useless.

Eyetracking

I was thinking about eyetracking yesterday anyway, then came across this link today: Eyetrack III – What You Most Need to Know

Most interesting, and a few surprises in there too. The underlined headline/link being a turn off to sub copy below being a lightbulb for myself.

Related to this, I’m idly beginning a Bunker site redesign over the next few weeks, along with integrating it into a more comprehensive neuromantics.net which can finally start releasing more information on what we are up to. PR and all that kids.

I’m Baaaaack!

Health – All fixed (in fact, slightly improved!)

Business – Hotting up for the Autumn rush. As always, calling all good freelancers, especially junior designers, illustrators and front end (including flash) developers.

Romance – All good. That’s all I’m saying about that. ;-)

Music – Yes here it is, on time and a cracker – September’s Mixtape. You won’t find these is the shops folks!
